My Month in Italy
My favorite trip ever was a month-long odyssey I took around Italy about 14 years ago. A month may seem like a long time, but in Italy, it is barely enough to see the main sights. It was my first time in Italy, so I wanted to see and do everything.
I started in Rome, rented a car and drove all the way to Naples and then went to the Amalfi Coast. I visited all the most famous museums and did everything that the guidebooks say you should do when you are there, but I found that many of my best memories were the times where I was a bit more relaxed.
This trip taught me something important. When you are checking sights off a list of must-sees, you often miss the human interactions and the feeling of discovery. Increasingly, I let myself wander and get a bit lost in the cities and little towns. It is important to allow time improvise and go where the day takes you. It was wonderful to immerse myself in the culture and shake off the familiar. Also, I'm a foodie, so I loved trying all the culinary delights that you can’t get anywhere else.
I have been to Italy many times since then, but that was my first time there, and it was amazing both for what I saw and what I learned about travel. It was an adventure that made a strong impression on me, and it made me want to give the same kind of intense getaway experience to all my clients. I want them to have the thrill of trying something new in an unfamiliar place, all while knowing that I am just a phone call away if they need me.
